It looks like a black bullhead to me. I've never even seen any of the madtoms in the flesh however....so I suppose it could be one of those. Looks really like a bulllhead though!
Is the adipose and caudal fin fused or seperate? If fused, madtom, if seperate, madtom.
If it's a bullhead, check the chin barbels. If they're white, yellow bullhead, if black, black bullhead, and if light brown/dusky, brown bullhead.

You mean if fused madtom, if seperate bullhead right? Also, I think you would be hard pressed to to ID that thing as a brown or black based on it's chin barbels. At that size/age it would be pretty difficult to tell them apart IMO.
I do believe that is a species of bullhead though.
