There are documented melanistic gars for all of the seven lepisosteids. It is tricky however to distinguish which are truly melanistic and which are just black through hormonal changes (I.E. spawning) or from physiologic stress.
It is well documented in the genus Atractosteus that dark coloration is often due to stress and malnutrition. It is also documented with A. spatula that captive fish will also often take a darker coloration than wild fish.
