Nice pike! I have heard (in places like "Esox Angler" magazine and "Musky Hunter" magazine) that vertical dangling holds cause damage to big muskies and northerns. I have not seen any real scientific/biological/anatomical information on this, just fishermen's talk. I would bet that the fish swam off nicely when you released it. To my mind, horizontal holds would damage the slime coat, so which is really worse?

It is hard to handle a fish that size, but I think this is the least invasive and least traumatic method. It was really cold that day, and the fish hardly even fought.....I thought I had hooked a log. So the fish hardly exerted itself and I think that is the real key for a healthy release.
That pike had to be released back into the gene pool...The trout anglers were not pleased.

I had that happen to me, thought I caught a log and didn't tell my 2 boatmates. All of a sudden I had a medium size northern at the surface and 3 bewildered fisherman. That week no one was catching northerns, I must have hit this one on the nose with the lure and he couldn't resist.
