Okay so I have been researching as much as I can on the web... I just have a couple of questions. The first is do I have to buy a starter culture or can they be collected locally. If so how does one collect daphnia? And is it too cold out now to collect them. As always any advice or pointers is appreciated!

I did a little research of this on Ask.com to see what they were and if It was something I may use for my native tank as well,
and found a good site with alot of info on where, when, and how to collect them.
hope this helps

I would purchase a culture. Personally I prefer Daphnia magna. They get large enough that even sunfish will eat them, yet are still small enough for darters, and shiners.
