Has anybody kept them in a tank by themselves? I'd be interested in knowing how it went. I hear pygmies prefer live food and lots of plants. Are they picky about temp? I'd guess they're not seeing they are basicly ditch and slough fish. What about their temperment? How would they do in a community tank?

I have a couple that are in a tank by themselves now... used to have some top minnows in it, but they got all excited over time and jumped... maybe the bandeds were chasing them? Any way, they do very well ina well planted tank. Mine eagerly eat frozen foods and will pick at some pelleted foods, but do not seem to pay much attention to flake.

I current keep about 5 of them I can't keep count from my trip to florida back in June.

Those fish are so tiny. I keep them with least killifish, my galaxy danios, bristlenose, pygmy cories and panda cories and cherry shrimp they all coexist peacefully

I have no idea myself what exact species they are and I lost my digital camera somewhere in florida so go figure! I've been keeping an eye out for a good deal for the exact model that I lost on ebay.

Cheers

They are very tolerant of a wide range of temperatures, water make up and all that.

Live food is pretty much a must. The neatest thing I seen them do was eat H. formosa fry. Looked like a smallmouth bass coming up from the bottom to nail a Rapala.

They do not mess with fish other than fry. When I kept them with other fish they were less concerned about it than other pygmies. As long as they get enough food they should be fine. Alone though they really shine, you can see them more often.

Here is what I do to make them and me happy. Pack the back of a ten gallon to twenty gallon tank with java moss and other plants. Leave the front wide open. Always put the food in right at the front of the glass. Force them to come out to eat. After a while they should come out when they see you in front of the tank to investigate if any food will drop in.

Great! I appreciate the input. I think I might just have to give these guys a try.
Does anyone know if they hybridize? I'm thinking about if I had more than one kind in a tank.

It was mentioned somewhere else (can't remember where) that it is possible but unlikely.

Following up...from the 5 I had...

 I have 2 left from what I can see as they're tiny.

They've got very FAT on red cherry shrimplets that gets unlucky same with Least killifish fry. So I think Red Cherry Shrimps are the key to keeping them fat and happy.
