Position Title: Fisheries Biologist Assistant (Natural Resource Specialist II) Position No. 00465

Location: Fisheries Division - Region V, Fredericksburg, VA Expected Hiring Range: $28,680 - $36,000


Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Supervises the American shad egg collection efforts on the Pamunkey and Potomac Rivers and coordinates with external cooperators in implementing egg collection efforts and prepare annual reports on field results. Enhances aquatic wildlife diversity and the quality of recreational fishing in a multi-district area by assisting staff in conducting fisheries management/research activities including data collection, data entry and summarization, implementation of resource management plans, age and growth evaluation, construction and maintenance of fisheries sampling equipment, and conducting facilities maintenance.

Qualification Guide
Working knowledge of fish egg collection procedures, and fisheries sampling techniques, practices and principles. Ability to work independently, work cooperatively with outside agencies, and supervise a large number of hourly staff in the egg collection efforts on two river systems. Demonstrated supervisory and interpersonal skills. Ability to organize, type, write and present information with an effective command of the English language. Ability to properly operate and maintain small watercraft, outboard motors and trailers, and specialized fisheries equipment. Knowledge of state purchasing procedures desired. Knowledge of fishing regulations and basic angling techniques. Competency in various trade skills, preferably electrical wiring, small engine repair and carpentry. Working knowledge of PC including Windows, Word, Access, Excel and Power Point. Ability to adapt to changing situations and conditions; work outdoors in various weather conditions; lift moderate to heavy loads; carry moderate loads over rough terrain; and read detailed maps and other instructional information.

HS diploma or equivalent required with experience noted above. A Bachelors degree in fisheries management is desirable. Work experience in anadromous shad egg collection preferred. Valid VA Driver's License required.

This is a Career Track position. Broader and more responsible experience in wildlife (Fisheries) program management, research, and supervision indicating possession of more comprehensive technical, interpersonal and organizational competencies are required for progression through the series.

You could always go for the director of VDGIF job, he just got canned after barely a year on the job. Read an interesting article in the Richmond paper today. Somehow it ended up in the Maryland DNR intranet news paper.
