Ok...looks like we have a long ways to go before the "pictoral ID" section is more or less "complete" :D

Where are we, who's working on the project, where are the Darters, and how can I help?

I think work stopped because there was too much argument over what was what, or whether a given fish was a hybrid, etc. ~

Irate is partially correct...

Uland was kind enough to start this project over a year ago, but time has been limited managing this forum and this thing called life.

We just brought it back up in conversation and changes are in the works.

I currently have between 7000 and 8000 photos. Most of which are useless. I'm at the point where I can begin to do a little more work.

The slow down has been due to the fact that providing traits that separate similar fishes on a national basis is enough to make you pull your hair out. Fishes are so variable that by the time you accommodate for all of the regional differences, the key becomes useless. I honestly don't know how professionals ever get anything written (I mean that with great respect).

The future of the key will be a simple photo and the area sampled. Providing details on ray/scale counts and the like simply leads to inaccuracy on my part since I know so little of the various populations. The photos will be arranged in such a way to allow for expansion/addition of regional differences.

I'll get started once I get some time....Business is keeping me away from home at the moment but the holidays might give me chance to begin.
