I've spent the last 2 years without any aquariums of any kind set up, mostly due to moving around. I'm settled down in a house now, so I'd like to get some tanks going.

I think some of you have already read about my 90 gallon tank and how it got cracked after I pulled it out of storage.

All this talk of MRBD, and how difficult they are to spawn, got me feeling up to a challenge. So I listed the 90 gallon tank and stand on Craigslist to try to get it out of my hair and give me the room to set up something else (that actually holds water, that is).

I posted the tank as being "for free" since that's how I got it originally, and it's not very attractive, nor does it hold water.

My mailbox was bombed within a few minutes.

First lady that hit my mailbox says she runs a reptile rescue and can pick it up TONIGHT. Of course that got me excited. I told her where I lived, told her I'd get the tank out of the house, but she just needs to get it into the car (I don't want the liability). She agrees, so I get my wife to help me move the tank out front. Except it is raining out. So I plop it in my foyer, blocking the front door entry, ass-uming the thing would be gone within an hour anyway. WRONG!

Then she emails me back and says she can't get it tonight. How about tomorrow? Oh, and by the way, she doesn't really run a reptile rescue.

Three other people email me within minutes of the first lady, I tell each of them that whoever can get it tonight gets it. None of them email back.

Person #5 emails me, isn't interested in taking my free tank, but wants to sell me his. (!!!!)

Living the dream...

I put some fish on craigslist once... nobody ever came and got them out of 8 or 9 people. One or two where just spams. It's not exactly the best place for getting rid of stuff, but there are some pretty good deals on tanks and equipment.

Since posting this I've had a few more people enquire, and when I tell them it is theirs if only they would commit to getting it tonight... silence.

I'm half tempted to just cut the sealant, break it down, and put it out with the recycling.

If you lived near me I would take it.

You may have more luck (and get warm-and-fuzzies) by contacting a reptile rescue group directly. I did a quick google search and came up with one near you; there may be others: http://triangleiguanarescue.com/

I really believe that the tank can be saved with some Epoxy Resin. I know of a 200+ gallon oddly shaped display tank at a local fish store that someone banged a cart into taking out a LARGE chunk of the corner...They patched it up and the tank has thousands of dollars of Marine Livestock in it right now...

Someone is driving over to get the tank now, though. It's gone. I don't really want to save it. If I ever get my hands on the kids playroom (HUGE room in the basement) then I'm going to want something bigger anyway. For now, I'd rather have something smaller.

The tank is gone. Once the kids are asleep, I'm moving the 55 gallon Oceanic in where the 90 gallon used to sit.

I pulled the ads from Craigslist and the torrent of emails has finally ended.

congratulations! we sold a car on craigslist last fall. i got emails every day and made a bunch of appointments to show, but only ~1/4 of the people showed up. after lowering the price a few hundred dollars it finally sold. it was tough because it seemed like every other car on there was a Ford Explorer.

you really have to look carefully at the responses. many seem to be phishing ploys or other scams.

When I got rid of my cative herp collection, I had like 15 ten gallon tanks, all of which I had gotten free over the years at the recycling center at my town transfer station. None could be trusted with water and some had cracks with duct tape. When I tried to return them to the recycling center, they wouldn't take them! I got the word in no uncertain terms from the Boss, they had to go, TODAY!
So I loaded them up in the back of the truck and drove to work where we had an empty 30 yard dumpster. I stood in the back of the truck and heaved those suckers in one at a time. SMASH! CRASH! BANG!
I gotta admit, it was fun!

Yeah apparently our city waste management won't take tempered glass for recycling. Not all aquariums are tempered glass but they assume all aquariums are and refuse to take them. I put out a busted 10 gallon that they left on the curb.

Have you tried freecycle?

Don't get me started on Freecycle. I've been on 3 different Freecycle mailing lists, and all of the moderators are hardcore fascists. Serious power trips!

Craigslist is nowhere near Freecycle on the evil scale.

Keep trying Craigslist. I picked up my 90 from someone moving last year and got a killer deal!
