I'm attempting to start a New York State tank (partly as a ploy to ooh and ah tropical aquarist friends so as to convert them to native fishkeeping and appreciation hehe)...am looking for 1 or 2 darters (Iowa, Rainbow, Greenside, Tessellated, Logperch) as well as some minnows (redbelly dace, rosyface shiner, emerald shiner, golden shiner, blacknose dace). I'm not looking for all of those species but just some I'm interested in. If anyone has some of the above they would like to give away let me know..shipping paid by me of course.[/i]

I also live in central NY and come across a few of those species often, where are you located?

No but I used to be a Morrisville State student. My major was aquaculture with a concentration in aquatic science. I live in the Finger Lakes region.

Wow, NY state native keepers. I'm in Schenectady NY, from the Finger Lakes area, pass by Syracuse often. I have Rainbow Darters and can easily get Greensides. Also just found a local N Redbelly Dace site (not colored up now).
Perhaps the three of us can get together for some collecting. I'm not opposed to a couple hr drive.

Oh and blacknose dace, tesselated darters, Golden shiners easy to come by around here and there I'd imagine.

That sounds great, I've been interested in doing some NYS "natives networking", even though I've just recently become interetsed in native fish. I've also never collected beyond basic dipnetting. Have either of you ever collected blue-spotted sunfish? I'd love to get one of those, and apparently the only place in upstate you can find them is Jamesville Reservoir (20 minutes from here) due to glacial holdovers or something like that.

I have collected a lot of tesselated darters, some greensides and only a single logperch. As for the minnows, golden shiners are in just about every body of water I collect in, same for blacknose dace. I can get those easy. I have also collected emerald shiners. I have yet to come across the rest of those fish you listed but would love to find some redbelly dace, I have found redside dace though...they are one of my favorite NY cyprinids.

As for bluespotteds, I have never personally collected them but I went to college with a guy who has found them in the Jamesville Reservoir. Here is a map with other places in NY where this fish lives.

hm redside dace? Have you maintained them in aquaria? What's your current aquaria stock (if you don't mind me asking)?

I have never kept the redsides myself, I collected them up near Morrisville but haven't found a closer place to where I live now near Seneca lake. My current native fish list is...

Longear Sunfish
*Rock Bass
*Green Sunfish
*Pumpkinseed Sunfish
*Largemouth Bass
*Brown Bullhead
Tadpole Madtoms
Rainbow Darters
Blackstripe Topminnows
Sailfin Mollies
*Blacknose Dace
*Fathead Minnows

The ones with the stars are the fish I collected myself in the area where I live.

In the past I have kept creek chubs, spottail shiners, American flagfish, orangethroat and tesselated darters, mottled sculpin, chain pickerel, central stonerollers, bluegill, logperch and others that slip my mind at the moment.

I have bred the sailfin mollys, rainbow and orangethroat darters and fathead minnows. Nothing fancy, I'm really not equipped at the moment to try and breed most of my fish. I would like to try to breed my tadpole madtoms though, they say it is difficult but I think it's important to at least try, epsecially since I have 7 individuals.

Hi all,
As NANFA regional representatives, Norm Soule and I are planning a NY fish sampling trip for the weekend of Oct 27-29(Fri-Sun) for Chautauqua/Alleghany Counties, NY (Fish Creek and vicinity). We are planning to stay in cabins at Alleghany SP (reasonable prices). All are welcome, please get in touch with me if interested. We need a head count.

Next year I would like to plan a couple central NY NANFA sampling trips, I will keep all posted.

PS- Seems wierd writing this email; it has been "thunder"-snowing for 1.5 days now and we have a couple feet of snow....I am confident all will be well by Oct 27...it's crazy.

Where abouts in CNY are you located? I know where you might be able to collect greensides but not rainbows.

This thread is weird as it started out as a request. Why don't you guys start individual threads in this section stating where you are and what you are interested in doing.

Ah yes, I used to go to college in Morrisville, not far from there. Ever been to "Empire Aquatics" in Canastota?
