There are many other natives that will do outstanding in a 10G tank, but shiners wouldn't come to mind in that group.

If your primary goal is to make use of the tank that you already have, there are a number of fine alternatives. Darters, pygmy sunfish, killies, etc.

I have never had a problem with shiners in a 10 gallon I could see a tank with a few lowlands or yellowfins and maybe some blackbandeds or swamp dartersAny suggestions of small fish that would be suitable for a 10g? Maybe some that can be collected in the Savannah River area?

I also agree iwth killier that a few pteronotropis would be better (lowlands are the one down your way I think)... they like a little less current and are a little calmer fish... and would do well with a couple of swamp darters underneath... actually that would make a great 10 gallon... 5 lowland shiners and 3 swamp darters....

Yup. Not all shiners are equal. Remember, LOTS of tropical shiners do great in a 10.
