SUMMER ASSOCIATES

The Asia Foundation’s Mongolia office is recruiting faculty, students, and professionals for an exciting program entitled: Securing our Future: Mongolia Natural Capital Conservation and Environmental Security Program. This program was launched in December 2006 and is comprised of elements that will build a body of ecological knowledge and understanding, and engage citizens and local schools in order to promote responsible resource use in Mongolia.

The Asia Foundation is a non-profit international non-governmental organization committed to the development of a peaceful, prosperous, just and open Asia-Pacific region. The Foundation supports programs in Asia that help to improve governance and law, economic reform and development, women’s empowerment and international relations. Drawing upon 18 offices across Asia, and over 50 years of experience, the Foundation collaborates with private and public sector partners to support leadership and institutional development.

To apply to any of the three programs described below, please send a current copy of your resume or CV with a cover letter describing your relevant educational and professional experience. In addition, please provide in a separate document a brief description (up to 500 words) of how you envision yourself contributing to the project for which you are applying. The Asia Foundation will cover in-country travel expenses and modest meal and lodging expenses while summer associates are working for TAF under the guidance of TAF staff. Applicants are responsible for securing medical evacuation insurance and travel funding to and from Mongolia. If requested, the Asia Foundation will provide applicants who are selected for participation with letters of support to apply for supplementary funding.

River Ecologists (3 persons)

Role: Serve as a team of scientific experts and advisors that will assist in developing a watershed and river monitoring program in Mongolia. Team goals are to: 1) interpret previously-collected data in Mongolia (biological, habitat, and chemical), 2) train volunteers, teachers, and students to use scientific river monitoring protocols, 3) verify identification of collected macroinvertebrates, 4) archive invertebrate collections, 5) work with other scientists to help establish tolerance values for benthic macroinvertebrates, and 6) model the scientific research process for participants.

Qualifications:
Masters or PhD candidates (or recent graduates) in river ecology, river biogeochemistry, aquatic entomology or a closely-related field
Strong skills in communication, teamwork, organization, and leadership
Interest in working with volunteers, teachers, and students
Ability to do moderately demanding physical work (lifting, hiking, etc.), and travel for extended periods of time through rough back-country conditions

Counterpart Coordination: The River Ecologists will work closely with staff and researchers at The Mongolian Aquatic Insects Survey (MAIS) Lab, The Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, the National University of Mongolia and other Ulaanbaatar-based institutes.

Timeframe: Late May through August 2007.

Venues: Ulaanbaatar, and cities and towns across Mongolia, as well as fieldwork in a number of sites to be determined.


Watershed/River Ecology Educators (3 persons specialized in upper elementary through the secondary level)

Role: Work with Mongolian teachers and curriculum specialists to develop a watershed education program for Mongolian schools that includes a strong river assessment component, addresses Mongolian academic standards, and is aligned with current scientific protocols. Conduct training workshops and assist with teacher institutes.

Qualifications:
At least 5 years of experience teaching watershed education and river assessment methods to school children
Proven skills in curriculum development and leadership within the educational community
Commitment to promoting environmental literacy in students
Ability to do moderately demanding physical work (lifting, hiking, etc.)
Willingness to travel into Mongolia’s countryside for several days at a time

Timeframe: Late June through mid-August for programming in Mongolia; limited time in Sept and Oct for evaluation and advice via email

Venues: Ulaanbaatar, and cities and towns across Mongolia.


River Monitoring Interns (4 Masters or undergraduate students)

Roles: Assist river ecologists and volunteers in the lab and in the field to implement the river monitoring program. Work closely with Mongolian and expatriate staff to create a watershed education curriculum.

Qualifications:
High achievement and strong interest in science
Interest in exploring careers in river ecology, natural science research, or natural science teaching
Strong skills in communication, organization, and teamwork
Ability to do moderately demanding physical work (lifting, hiking, etc.)
Willingness to travel for extended periods in the countryside and back-country

Timeframe: Late June through August

Venues: Ulaanbaatar, and cities and towns across Mongolia, as well as back-country field work.

Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association (WPWA)


WPWA is a non-profit organization and established RI watershed council,
devoted to promoting and protecting the integrity of the lands and
waters of the Wood-Pawcatuck watershed.

WPWA seeks motivated, self-driven applicants, well-rounded in
management, fundraising, facilities and outreach, for the full-time
position of Executive Director. This is a challenging position that
encourages autonomous and creative leadership, and offers an opportunity
to develop and implement creative environmental solutions to watershed
issues.

The executive director operates the organization, supervises a small
staff, and reports to the Board of Trustees. Applications accepted

Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC)

WRWC is a 501©(3) non-profit organization working to restore the Woonasquatucket
River Watershed as a natural, cultural, recreational and economic resource for Rhode
Island. WRWC seeks energetic, committed, and resourceful applicants for the full-time
position of Executive Director, who will build on the successes of the organization,
supervise a small staff, and report to the Board of Directors. The current focus areas of
the council are: 1. Riparian and wetland buffer restoration, 2. Dam removal/fish passages in the lower river, 3. Building community capacity and stewardship of restored areas through educational and recreational programming, and 4. Addressing superfund site issues in cooperation with our communities, RI DEM and EPA Region 1.
The successful candidate will demonstrate successful experience in managing a small
office, grant writing, working with municipal and state government programs, and
addressing the ideas and opinions of diverse populations.

BASIN EDUCATOR FOR NATURAL RESOURCES (WATER RESOURCE EMPHASIS) - LOWER CHIPPEWA RIVER BASIN

This position works out of 239 Water Street, Eau Claire, WI.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

This Basin Educator plays a lead role in developing the capacity for watershed and ecosystem-based educational programs that protect and improve local land and water resources. The Educator fosters and facilitates stakeholder involvement in developing natural resources conservation strategies for the Basin. The Educator helps citizens, agencies, and local governments identify, develop and implement educational activities in area communities. This position operates in cooperation with Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) – Forestry, Land, Water, and Customer Assistance and Employee Services (CAES) Divisions. This collaboration focuses on the development and delivery of basin-specific education strategies and programs that address priorities identified by WDNR, local citizens and community decision-makers, and other resource management partners. Assume weekly travel throughout the county and occasional travel within the state. Work evenings on a regular basis and occasionally on weekends, as needed to meet local needs. QUALIFICATIONS:

* Required Bachelor's degree in a field that relates to the content area of this position such as water resources or natural resources management
* Several years of related natural resources management experience
* Ability to plan, implement and evaluate community-based, non-formal educational programs that reach, and are accessible to, a wide range of audiences
* Ability to teach and communicate ideas effectively verbally, in writing and through educational technology to adults and youth
* Strong group and educational facilitation skills
* Ability to organize work and to work productively with indirect supervision in a highly visible public sector environment

* stormwater management, green infrastructure, and low impact development
* watershed protection and management;
* shoreland/riparian/estuarine management;
* sustainable forest management and protection; and
* agricultural management practices that protect land and water quality
* Experience in the development of educational materials (print and audio-visual)
* Experience with web page development
* Volunteer or paid experience working with people from culturally diverse groups
