Sorry about the quality! These must be some of the worse I've ever posted. I’m guessing the fish is a chain pick but not positive. It was scooped today along with 3- Pseeds and a ton of tadpoles from bog pond in Rochester MA. As always any and all comments and opinions welcome. Thanks for reading.

At tht size it could be very difficult to make a determination between redfin and chain. I'm not sure if charachteristics hold true at that size but the snout does look awfully short for a chain.

The stripe under the eye appears to be angling forward as it goes down away from the eye. I believe that is indicative of a chain pickerel.

Maybe I can get him fat, drunk, and happy before hand! You'll be the first one I tell when it does.

That's interesting that you found that tiny pickeral in winter. I found one just like it in late November and someone else here posted another one recently.
Those have got to be from a second spawn. If pickeral spawn only at ice out as I've always believed, I just can't see how there can be such tiny, almost larval young in late fall or winter.
I don't ever recall reading about pickeral having a second breeding season.
FWIW, the one I found came from a pond where redfin and chain picks are both present. I chose to believe mine was a redfin only because there was alot of red coloration. Also, going with the second spawn theory, I decided redfin made more sense because if chain picks had a second season, it would be more well known based on the much larger abundance of chains over redfin. Not very scientific I know.
I'd be very interested in whether there is data on second spawns for either species. I'll scan my books and do a Google search when I get home from work.

Snout length can be a pretty good indicator of species even in juvies, so I am pretty sure this fish is a redfin.

There is data on this for Esox americanus.... I however do not have the reference in front of me right now... Do a search of Copeia it is in there.....

The pickerel in my breeding pond spawned this past fall, so there is first hand evidence that they can and will spawn twice if conditions are fitting.

Well I did find several references for a second spawn for Esox americanus. One even suggested they are the only esox that does.
I would say based on that, the fish in question is a redfin.
Also, this site has a picture of a YOY E. americanus that looks just like the pic above.

The redfin that Mike Lucas gave me last spring was 1/4" when he caught it, during the previous fall.
