eLeMenT and I were out today with a group of staff from MDNR to get ready for our volunteer stream monitor trainings that are coming up soon and of course had to see what else was in the stream at the end of the trip. After collecting a couple dozen scuds, that are inside some happy bellies now, we started to get fish in the D-frame invert nets more regularly. So we gave it about 15 minutes of bug and fish searching amongst the group and we got a pretty nice list for a stream that was only about 10 feet wide, albeit really close to a good sized river.

American eel
Eastern blacknose dace (a whopping 76 mm SL! Jenkins and Burkhead reported the largest from VA at 74 mm SL)
Satinfin shiner
Rosyside dace
Tesselated darter
Eastern mosquitofish
Banded killifish
Pumpkinseed

When I put those fish in the 10 gallon at the end of the day the cambarus bartonii came immediately out of his burrow throwing his claws in the air trying to catch whatever minners he could get. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a snack or two that night.

Then you won't be surprised tomorrow morning to see the skeletons of two small fish...
