One of my favourite native fish, the rainbow shiner, in a breeding tank. Unfortunately they like their eggs a lot.

i have some of these in my 125 gal, where did you get them?
also I would be interested in how you got them to spawn

Hello hmt321,
those fish are from your state, but youcan find them also in Georgia, etc. Before we put them in a breeding tank (100x60cm), they have been conditioned with good food and kept separated by gender.
As you can see on one picture, I use a special substrate, the fish accept it and spawn in it. After 6 or 7 days we only catch the parents out and put them in another breeding tank.

i would love some specifics, the substrate looks like hollow cerimac cylinders, i would guess that the eggs fall inbetween them and the parents cant eat them.
how long did you winter them, and at what temperature.
also what types of food do you prepare them with

I would take some of those over cardinal tetras anyday.

Yes there is lots of information about this here on the forum... use the search feature and you will find a lot of discussions about rainbow shiners including some discussion of spawning and raising them

Blacktail Shiner
Cherryfin Shiner
Orangefin Shiner

You'll also find significant populations of rainbow shiners much upstream well into NE Alabama near Fort Payne, AL, with somewhat different coloration than those to the south.

I love those fish. When I started my native tank this year, they were out of stock so I dont have any right now. Cant wait to get some though.

They are not easy to find for sale. Might keep your eye on Jonahsaquarium.com. I know Mark has carried them in the past. Check aquabid.com They occasionally pop up on there. Otherwise head to chrosomus territory, and collect some yourself.

These are usually nice but young fish that are captive bred. I got some from them with a coupon that I bid on at the convention several years back. They grew up nicely.

Great to hear...thanks all. Captive bred for aquariums sounds good to me. Never had shiners before but I'm hoping these will take prepared foods.

Oh yes. Even wild caught shiners take to flake food almost immediately.
