I was curious to know that when spring arrives, can I go to the lakes near my house and rip out of the water plants from the lakes and take them home and plant them in my aquarium???

I am not educated in the proper care of native plants nor their identification. So I am wondering if its possible to take them from water and plant them or are their certain types that may not be compatibel?

Thank You

I have been doing this with my pond and the local plants have done very well. I have had less success with aquarium-raised plants.

I advise digging them up so as not to disturb the roots, as opposed to "ripping" them out. You will be surprised at how many different plants you find.

Just make sure it isn't a national park, or ever a state park where plants could be protected. There are also some private protected lands that prohibit collecting of any nature.

Also, a plant found in high light will probably require high light once indoors so make sure you have sufficient lighting.

Just about all north american aquatic plants will require medium to high light. The best way to go the native plant route is to just try different things. Sometimes they work out, sometimes they disintegrate. Just about all of our plants can be kept together (some people argue that some aquatic plants can be slightly allelopathic, but I'm not convinced that it will do much in an aquarium).

As for plant ID, there a number of good books listed in this thread: http://forum.nanfa.o...?showtopic=3526.

Happy planting!

I can't help but wonder..... that the plant is in a local lake doesn't necessarily mean it's a local native... does that matter to you?
