How do you catch small Crappie?

Hook and line is not really an option. They aren't called papermouths for nothing. Their mouths are disproportionately thin for their body weight so that if you hook them by the mouth/lip, they will break free from their own weight alone.



Nonsense. I catch crappie of all sizes with hook and line and never landed a pair of lips.

In many states, hook and line is the only legal way to catch them, and loads of people fish for them (including myself). I suspect the issue is to not set the hook too hard.

They are soft mouthed... when I was a kid, we used to fish with live monnows and a cork... dad told me to wait til the cork when under and reel 'em in... didn't really set the hook... probably missed some, but also caught a lot... on a hook and line.
