I found this fish in a pond in Dallas Texas. It is at most 1 inch long. Can anybody tell me what it is?

looks like a Blue Gill, see the verticle stripes in the 2nd pict. its difficult to say at that size. even if it turns out to be a longear, spotted, redear, etc. feeding and care are all the same

I have looked at the pics in the pictorial fish id of the forum and I am still not sure if any of them match. the color around the gills and eyes just seems to change in different lighting situations, mostly like a reflection. I have noticed that he has a black line under the bottom lip. He is in a 20 gallon tank with live plants and I feed him about 20-30 brine shrimp a day. He has barely grown at all. Would this type of fish grow very slowly? Also where is the general care section in forum for this type of fish.

I have seen small longears that look like this. They have more barring than bluegill and the bars are single rather than being doublets. If I had to make an educated guess, I would say longear.

the verticle stripes make me say bluegill, but the lack of the 2 black spo0ts above and below the tail indicate that it could be a long ear or spotted, dustin has more experence with this sort of thing than i,

you should be able to move the fish over to flake food soon, shrimp are great food, but probably not as a staple. I feed my Orange spots hikari cichlid gold as a staple and i supplement there diet 2 times a week with ghost shrimp (that i catch, not from a lfs) and frozen bloodworms.

the trick is to get it eating off the top of the water, it should not be that hard, most sunfish eat insects from the surface, its instinct, they just have to recognize it as food

Looks like a baby longer to me. They have somewhat different proprtions than bluegills, even at that size. Little 'gills tend to have pointier snouts and longer fins.

Hi everyone. This is the newest pic of my unidentified fish. He has barely grown at all but I am feeding him freeze dried brine shrimp. I am starting to think it's a bluegill. If you look at the old pics and compare it to the new one you can see that the vertical bars are starting to separate. I still can not see an ear so I am going to try and get a better pic with more light. But this may help some............Jeff
