Salary Range: $30,811.50 - $46,443.00

Description:
Two Water Quality technicians are needed for the water quality section of the Stormwater Services Division. The majority of the work will be out of doors in various weather conditions. Much of the work involves inspecting stormwater discharge points; water quality monitoring; conducting field analytical tests to evaluate dry weather flows for illicit discharges; evaluating and interpreting monitoring results; using GIS maps, dye testing, CCTV, and other methods to identify sources of pollution; using GPS to map structures; collecting evidence of stormwater pollution code violations, writing letters, and conducting other enforcement activities. Stream assessment work will be conducted during winter months under dry weather to identify problems. Other work will include investigating citizen concerns, assisting in industrial inspections and monitoring, wet weather sampling, and public education.

Some work may occur outside normal working hours. Some of the work will involve lifting equipment (usually not more than 40 pounds) and carrying equipment over sloped or uneven terrain.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Biology, or a relevant environmental sciences curriculum with related course work; or an Associates degree in a similar field with three year’s experience in environmental protection and one year experience in municipal stormwater management; ability to make independent investigations of stormwater problems and interpret technical data; ability to work out-of-doors in inclement weather; ability to work cooperatively, ability to communicate effectively, ability to use a PC for word-processing, property research and database maintenance. Course work in biology, limnology, aquatic ecology, aquatic chemistry or related fields and/or experience in water quality monitoring, stream monitoring, biological monitoring, and geographic information systems is highly desired but not required. A valid Class “C” North Carolina driver’s license and good driving record is required.

Individuals selected for conditional offers of employment must pass the City of Durham physical examination including drug and alcohol testing.
