Hi new to this and I was wondering I want to keep a little ten gallon for minnows just the ones you buy at the baitstore and was wondering what do I feed them. I know what eats them lol just not how to keep them alive. Also any ohter pointers to care for feeding minnows will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome fishinfireman.

Every minnow I've had has eagerly eaten flake food. I always make sure and supplement their diet with other goodies (dried/frozen invertebrates) for a balanced diet. Some minnows will benefit from algae food supplement as well, so try and read up on the fishes natural diet.

I agree minnows are not picky and just plain old tropical flake or even goldfish flakes work just fine.

Yep. The shiners and dace in my tank took to flake literally hours after being introduced. I think minnows naturally investigate anything suspended in the water column, and so when they sample flake food...it's like manna from heaven!

Thanks for everyone's help I have just been feeding them goldfish food so far and only one has floated. Must be working.

I recommend that you switch to something "meaty-er" for these guys when you get a chance... most of these guys make a living on small animals... not plants... brine shrimp flakes or cichlid flakes are ususally a little better than goldfish food.

These Shiners seem to like freeze dried bloodworms.

You can sometimes give your shiners a little treat and toss some live mosquito larvae in there. Frozen foods such as mysis and bloodworms are good foods, and the fish love them.
