Well, my "wealth" of knowledge might only be 2 cents...

I have been intending to write up a little sticky on how to set up an inexpensive soil-based planted tank. Hopefully I can soon.

Sorry didnt want to seem so anxious  And no offense to whoever wrote that book, but i really would prefer your first hand knowledge. Books are great for general reference, But for me there is nothing better than hearing from a real person, if you know what i mean LOL. so no rush i will wait patiently for your version.

Very nice tank and fish. The fish look to be plump and happy - especially the sunnies. How large is your spotted sucker? I have always wanted to keep one, but fear I'd need a larger tank than a 46 gallon eventually.

Beautiful tank and fish. Love the vid, thanks for taking the time to share. I am curious about your black banded sunfish. I have read they can be fussy and are difficult to keep with other fish especially aggressive feeders like shiners and minnows. What's the secret? How do you keep so many happy fish in a 40 gallon tank?

the plants I have in the tank don't seem to require any special lighting. I have just 4 regular 20 watt fluorescent bulbs above it, two are in a aquarium fixture and the other two are very cheap ($10) under the counter lights. I will say you get what pay for with those because I have had to replace both of those cheap ones in the last year. If I did it over (and I may still do this eventually) I would probably get two double strip T-5 fixtures. I think this would allow me to have a wider variety of plants and I could probably do that for around $100 maybe even a little less. You are definitely correct about making the fish comfortable helping to keep them healthy, I am a strong believer of this as well.
