odd looking fish ID help

Hey all,
Today while out fishing in the Little Duck river, I caught me what I thought at the time was just a smallmouth bass (baby one) upon talking to my grandfather, we are now having trouble correctly IDing the fish. the fish looked very much like a smallmouth shape wise, he was about 5 inches, had very nice bronze coloring to him on his back with a white belly, but the thing that got me was that he had red eyes, like a rock bass or warmouth, (i think those have red eyes not sure) just wondering if anyone had any further insight or opinions to what it may be. If I had known it wasn't just a baby smallie I probably would have kept him or at least took a pic of him. But hind sight is always 20\20

Smallmouth have red eyes as well.

Drewish is right. I don't even think I have ever caught a smallmouth without red eyes.
