Tubenose Goby: Proterorhinus marmoratus

This is one of the lesser known gobys that inhabit the Great Lakes region. Currently these fish only have spread around the Western Lake Erie, Detroit river, Lake St. clair, St. clair river area. The Tubenose goby does not seem to compete well with Native fish or with the more aggressive Round goby. Regardless of this one needs to keep an eye open for new introductions of this fish.

Habitat type is pretty much the same as the round goby. They frequent areas with large rocks or rip rap. In addition Tubenose gobys also will frequently be found in heavy vegetation along shoreline.

Tubenose gobies can be Identified from the round goby by their darker mottled coloration and the possesion of anterior nostrials. The head of these fish also appears more squared and the eyes are not set so high on the skull.
