Aquatic Biology Internship – 2008

Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission

The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission is announcing the availability of a seasonal biologist position. The position will be based out of Frankfort, Kentucky but will involve some overnight travel statewide. We are looking for candidates to primarily assist with sampling for freshwater organisms (mussels, fishes, snails, and crayfishes). Additionally, assistance with a plant survey will be needed for a portion of the period.

Candidates should be able to hike and carry equipment long distances when required. In addition, working conditions may include exposure to hot temperatures and also uncomfortably cool water conditions during the workday and long work days as needed. There is the potential for encountering venomous animals in western Kentucky as part of this position. Experience with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets is required and candidates will gain experience using database software (Microsoft Access and FileMaker Pro). Experience with ArcView or ArcGIS software is a plus. SCUBA certification is preferred but not required. Candidates should be organized and enthusiastic about fieldwork in the natural sciences.

The projected duration of the position is June 1 through mid October of 2008. Interns are required to provide their own housing and living expenses. If overnight travel is involved, meals, transport, and lodging are covered by KSNPC. Daily transportation costs are covered by KSNPC. Candidates must possess a valid U.S. Driver’s License.

If interested, send a resume by mail or email with a letter of interest, references, and a copy of transcripts (original not required) to:
