Title: Summer Interns - Endangered Fish

Job Description: The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Conservation Services Division, Fish Section is seeking two summer interns. The positions are located in Santa Fe with requent travel throughout the state for fieldwork. Primary responsibilities include assisting with field projects involving native and endangered fish species in the San Juan, Gila, and Pecos river basins, processing of laboratory samples, and general office duties. Appointments are for 90 days, with potential extension.

Qualifications: Applicants should be enrolled in or recently graduated from a biological sciences or related degree program. Must have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, ability to lift 70 lbs and carry 50 lbs. Must enjoy long days of outdoor activity in all weather conditions.

Salary: $10.50

Title: Biological/ Fisheries Technician (3 positions)

Job Description: Biological Technicians will assist with the following: Native aquatic species inventory, Amphibian reproduction monitoring, Endangered fish population monitoring, Virgin River hydrologic/habitat studies, Native fish recovery plan implementation, Mechanical and chemical non-native fish eradication
data analysis, report preparation, and species distribution mapping, stream renovation and habitat re-habilitation projects, other duties as assigned.
Positions will be filled as soon as possible, and last until the end of August with many opportunities for extension

Qualifications: Applicants must have a background and interest in native wildlife management and conservation, particularly with fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Technical writing, communications, and organizational skills, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and ArcMap GIS are desired. Experience in population monitoring techniques, endangered species management, habitat monitoring, and data analysis is preferred. A completed degree in biological sciences, ecology, zoology, wildlife, fisheries or closely related field is preferred. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule under harsh and adverse field conditions, and backpack and/or camp for up to a week while conducting field work.

Title: Fisheries Biological Aide (3 Positions Available)

Location: Salmon, Idaho
Job Description: Applicants will be part of a five-person team monitoring the abundance, distribution, and habitat use of salmonids in the Lemhi River subbasin, Idaho. Applicants will have the chance to gain experience using various fisheries sampling techniques including electrofishing, snorkeling, redd count, and stream habitat surveys; PIT-tagging resident and migratory salmonids; and collecting and organizing associated biological data.

Dates Needed: June 9, 2008 to September 26, 2008 (dates flexible)
Qualifications: Minimum one year completed pursuing a B.S. degree in fisheries or wildlife biology, or related field. Applicants should have basic knowledge of anatomy, life history and ecology of various salmonid species and the ability to identify juvenile salmonids in-hand. Preferred applicants are detail oriented, have the ability to work independently with little supervision and are able to following instructions. Most importantly, applicants must be willing to work as a team player. In addition to the above qualifications, applicants must be able to lift up to 60 pounds, pack up to 40 pounds for several miles, and walk up to eight miles a day along stream banks and trails. Applicants must also be willing to travel extensively and stay in travel trailers and/or camp in semi-remote areas. Finally, applicants should be willing to work in adverse weather conditions, long days, and on holidays, weekends, or nights as necessary, be at least 18 years of age, and possess a valid drivers license.
