I have tried to get juvenile black crappie to eat pelletized food before but w/o success?

Has anyone gotten juvenile crappie to eat pellets?

I have converted crappie to pellets, but I did not start until they were about 5 inches. I started with earthworms dropped into the tank. As they began to associate the "drop" with food, I started slowly with pellets. I kept up with the worms for quite a while until they were taking the pellets well enough.

I have feed trained black and white crappies on multiple occasions using multiple methods. Best is with larger number at high densities but low density work as well. Freeze dried krill was the first non-living food in most instances. They usually would hit that within a day or so. After about a week they really get fired up when I walk into the room, then I start slipping in some sort of pellet. Sometimes it helps to pre-soak pellets in live baby brine shrimp solution. It takes another week of nibbling at pellets befoire they start pounding them down and growing. FOr me they can blow ther doors off bluegill once they are on pellets.

My crappie actually eats bloodworms...who would have known they could be such versatile eaters?

Pellets though I have never tried.

I've had mine for about a week and I feed him worms and minnows from a local stream and sometimes he will eat a crayfish.

My black crappie will go right up to them, but won't take them yet. He observes my warmouth as he eats, and I think he's starting to realize the pellets are food.

Toss pellets in groups of two or three so they are in water on couple of seconds at most before warmouth or somebody else consumes them. This may put the crappie into a competitive mode where it will be less scrutenizing before striking.
