Does anyone know if fairy shrimp eggs are spread in the wind with dust? My 125 was sitting on the deck full of water waiting to be set back up and I had noticed everything in my yard containing water was full of mosquito larvae. I hadn't seen such a huge amount of mosquito larvae anywhere so I started poring out all the standing water and checked out the 125 expecting it to be full of mosquito larvae too but instead it has fairy shrimp in it. My old water barrels I caught rain water with in my last place of residence had fairy shrimp in them but I was never sure where they came from since I had put fairy shrimp in them and I thought they were from those shrimp. But this aquarium had never had fairy shrimp in it as was washed out thoroughly when I took it down. Not only did it have fairy shrimp but there was no mosquito larvae. Kind of an odd coincidence. Do fairy shrimp eat mosquito larvae or out compete them for food? Very pretty little shrimp, almost totally transparent.

I believe Fairy Shrimp eggs can pass right through the digestive tracts of birds, so your mysterious spontaneous fairies may have arrived in the droppings of a thirsty bird perched for a cool drink. Yes, they also can be dispersed by the wind.

Fairy shrimp are filter feeders. Possibly they 'cleaned' the water and the mossies decided to lay their eggs elsewhere. I have seen this in pails to collect rain water to water plants. The dingy dirty pails will get larvae fast, while clear water pails are ignored.
This year the fairies were thick in a swamp I catch them at. Have not been back since it warmed some, but figure they would be gone quickly, as the diving beetle larvae were coming on stong.
