While not technically about fish, I would like to know what plants are good for native tanks. My wife and I always keep our tropical tanks heavily planted, but we're not sure what plant species can survive in the colder water of the native tanks. Or what are some native species that will do well in an aquarium enviroment?

Thanks,
Heckle

Heckle,
If you have a tank full of native fish, then it only follows that the plants should be natives also, right? I obtained all of my plants (all natives) from azgardens.com. Take a look at thier site and see what you think........Hooper Goldsborough

I am just starting to get into natives and haven't really caught anything for my tank yet, but I do plan on using native plants in the tank to make it look more natural. As far as getting the plants, I enjoy just being outdoors and in the water so I think that the best thing you could do is go find some in nature yourself. Some may work out and flourish in your tank and some may just die off. Its trial and error and you can probably even post up some pictures of what you find and get some info from others here.

I'm really looking forward to going out and searching for some native plants to see what I can find.

If you have trouble finding plants or finding any that actually work out for you then I would go the route that Hooper recommended, but try looking for some and give them a shot.

A few common aquarium plants, like Elodea canadensis, Cabomba caroliniana, Vallisneria americana, Riccia fluitans, and some Ludwigia are native to North America, and do fine in cool-water tanks.

Thanks for the replies. We have all of the above and will try them in the cold water tank we're currently setting up. My wife (who is the plant expert in this family :) ) is looking forward to experimenting with various native species.

Thanks again,
Heckle

Almost left out hornwort/ coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum)! There are also some native Myriophyllum, but I don't know how many are available in the trade.

Found it! I thought I had bookmarked it. It's at Arizona Aquatic Gardens (http://azgardens.com/misc_plants.php). They're calling it "Octopus Plant".
