Had to turn this big fellow loose, as I only have one native tank and he would have eaten all of my darters. I was lifting rocks in a shallow creek section, and when he hit the dip net, he almost took it out of my hand. Rough estimate of size is around 4" - my finger joint measures at 1 1/2". The creek on my farm is pretty thick with these banded sculpins, but typically, they're around 2". This one was a monster.

impressive!

I saw quite a few today while I was out collecting rocks for my tank. I did not manage to catch any as I was not planning on finding anything that interesting though.

Sculpins can get bigger that that, and can look truly ferocious. You should avoid releasing fish back to a stream after keeping them in a tank, since you could move diseases around. I understand that the sculpin would certainly eat any available darters in a tank.

I believe he only kept it long enough to take a pic in the bucket, it never went home.

I know a spring that's got some whopper bandeds in it; I'll have to go see if I can find one to beat yours!

Nice find, John. If I ever have the space, I would like to set up a sculpin tank.

I kept a fantail darter once with a pair of mottled sculpins.

The darter killed the sculpins and that was that.
