
Are SeaClear System II tanks overkill for freshwater?

you can build one for much less
a mag drive 350 powerhead costs about $60.00,
you can buy a 40 gal rubber made container at wally world for about $10-$15
get a plastic storage storage drawer like this here for about $15
plastic pot scrubbies can be found very cheap at dollar stores (and i believe that they have more surface area) lets say $10
you will probably spend $40 on filter floss and plumbing fittings to hook everything up
so thats
$145.00 for a filter that will not look as pretty but will do the exact same job
another option is a high end canister filter i think a eheim 2028 pro 2 can be found for $235.00 it is rated for aquariums up to $160 gal
