I am in Southeast Virginia (Newport News) and would like to add a few species to my tank. I have a wish list, but not sure what would be the appropriate size (pelet trainable) this time of year.

yellow perch
redbreast
green sunfish
redfin pickerel
pumpkinseed
common carp

If anyone has a spot they wouldn't mind sharing or any other species I should be looking for that would be great. I have Saturday by myself so I would like to be out enjoying the weather and doing a little collecting. I have posted in the local section as well, but I don't think as many people check it, so if this post has to be deleted it's ok.

Thanks

You might as well get out there and see what you can find! I've found plenty of juvenile (1-3") sunnies here in TN recently; I'm sure you can find some in VA too. Do you really want to keep a carp? It doesn't take them long to become gargantuan brutes.

I probably don't want to take the carp home, I more or less want to see a small one. I know that sounds funny but I want to see for my self how small the mouth on a tiny one is.

Sounds good, thanks. I caught one I would estimate at 5 lbs when I was trying to get a small sunny. I caught him on a red wiggler on a #8 hook, I couldn't believe that the fish was that large, but I could barely unhook it because my thumb and forefinger were so cramped in there.

I saw a kid catch a golden shiner and it looked pretty cool, from a distance I couldn't tell if he had a shad or a small carp, I may see about collecting one of those from a bait shop instead of carp fishing. Really hoping to find a redfin pickerel one day.
