Does anyone's fish scratch themselves by swimming against a rock or branch in anyones tank? I have sunfish and chubsuckers that will occasionally do this. I assume its a sign of a parasite, but not sure. Any ideas?

This can be a sign of a parasite, but not necessarily. I have had fish do this when they were perfectly healthy as well. Just as a preventative measure, I would add some salt to your water if you don't already keep it there. I believe the going recommended dosage is about a Tbs per 5 gallons.

do your fish do this constently?

or do you see them do it every once in a while?

fish with skin or scale infections or parasites sometimes do this constantly

I have seen my healthy sunfish rub aginst the gravel, or a piece of drift wood everyonce in a while.

I am of the opinion that salt should not be kept in a fw aquarium on a constant level (but i almost always have catfish)
i do use it upon addtion of new fish, or when i have an ich break out (with heat), or if i notice a abrasion or someting on a fish

Fish will also do this if your water quality is poor. A water change might be in order.

I always thought that scatching or "flashing" was a sign of ich. I always just add some salt when I see flashing and it usually goes away in a couple days. It is always good to catch anything in the early stage.

Oh, C'mon Irate. You don't mean that do you? I've had itchy fish for years. I don't like it. I've even tried to rid them of it. But they seem healthy and live long.

Wait a minute here! I feel like I've just show up to gun fight with a toothpick!

To slow the derail down a bit...

Personally I keep 1-2 TBS salt per 5 gallons in all of my tanks at all times. I'm going to tell you that this must be done but I've found it just keeps most of the little stuff from being a bigger problem. Madtoms prefer a slow increase in salt it seems so take it easy on them at first. Again this is just my opinion.

My fish are scratching now too. One is scratching at its eye, and another around it's nose. I've added some salt to the aquarium. How long does it usually take to start working? Have any of you tried any products in a store to remove parasites or cure other ailments? It's my rosy shiner and Southern Redbelly. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I know many probably don't think of it, but when was the last time you did a water change? (don't be embarrassed, I myself don't do them all that often)

Sounds like allergies to me. Just add some benadryl.
