Hey, I'm new to all this but excited to start keeping north american fish. I was thinking 40gal w/ bluegill or maybe trout or something. Like I said I'm new and I have no idea where to start.

Welcome to the forum!

Where are you located? You should add your location to your profile, as it can help us answer questions about identifying fish and help find seining partners and such.

A 40 gallon provides several possibilities. Bluegill aren't near as attractive as some of the other sunfish. Trout generally get too big for a 40 gallon. Not sure about brook trout, but I would go with a larger tank for them.

Are you looking for a predator, or something colorful, or both?

Don't forget about the non-game fish! Many people here prefer them for their ease of keeping as well as aesthetics. Look at some of the photos of darters and shiners, especially. You may find you like them better!

Agreed. A 40 gallon would make a nice stream tank.

Utah, that's a first I think! Do you have pupfish out there?
