I am a firm believer in using a soil or iron rich substrate and feeding the water column. Although it is expensive to buy some of the aquarium gravel designed for plants I have found it to work amazingly well. I have also started using co2 injection and liquid ferts about 5 years ago and bam the plants went nuts...... it took a while to get the dosing correct but now all 20 tanks are looking great. Anyone know of an aquarium 12 step program? lol :)

I have found that paying attention to some on the aquatic plant forums has helped a lot. Although most of them focus on Amano's styles of aquascaping alot of the info works with native plants.
