I know for a fact there are three different fin-color forms: yellowfinned, whitefinned, and orangefinned. The ones in the creek behind my house have varying combinations of all three. Some have yellow fins with white pectorals and a white "cap" on their head, while others have mostly orange fins with yellow pectorals, and others have all yellow or all orange fins. I have yet to find any all-white finned ones in this creek, but I know there are some in other drainages. AFAIK, the color forms are seperated by drainage. I'll try to post some pics tonight.

Not the best picture, but you can see the "white cap" I'm talking about.

The "normal" yellowfins will have a red body with pure yellow head and fins.

One you have seems to be particulary nice race. Mine in normal color is just slightly pinkish/brownish with clear to reddish fins, but burning males turns bright orange-red to red.

The ones I have around here go on and off of breeding dress on a weekly basis, IME. It may have something to do with food, temp, or other factors than locality, though.

Are the different color forms considered subspecies, or just races?

Depending on where we collect, Dustin and I get three distinct varieties. When in breeding colors these have either red, yellow or white fins depending on which drainage they came from.

I've been wanting to respond to this, so here it is... these are from the Athens Georgia area and are the "white fin" version of yellow fin shiners. Several years ago I was told they did not exist despite my photos... that I must have somehow not been seeing the yellow in the fins... but the fins were really whote and now there is a scientific paper that says so...

Well here are some old photos that I took... white fins, yellow green heads, and red fish... Athens, GA yellowfin shiners!mystery_fish_1.JPG

I've caught some like that before. I just can't seem to get any good pictures since they don't stop moving.
