I was down at the river today collecting some feeder minnows, when I noticed a ton of the small, black snails. I have seen these my entire life and not really given much thought to them. Does anyone around here know the Scientific name for these little guys? The are small, cone shaped and black - I would post up some pics but don't have a camera. Also, would they help eat the algae in my 55g?

There are a lot of aquatic snails, and many of them are small, cone-shaped, and black. You're going to have to provide photos at the least (and that still won't help me much; I'm lucky if I can get the buggers to family). In my experience, snails do not keep tanks clean of algae, even if they are algae-grazers. Also, you should be aware that many parasites that affect fish also require snails in their life cycle, so putting snails in your tank could conceivably introduce a parasite as well.
