Here is my 5.5 gallon tank that has a goldfish in it currently to cycle it. I did a cleaning of it since the sticklebacks that died recently seemed to have a fungus.
I have a peice of driftwood, three pagoda stones, and an aponogeton that is close to blooming. I have a small hang on tank filter rated at 60 gph. I am dying to seek out some red bellied dace once the tank is established, and will have my 30 gallon ready in about a week for more fish.

Nice looking tank! I like the rock cave on the left side.

The "cave" is actually the peice of driftwood, it has a perfect arch to make a great hiding spot for fish. I've had this peice for many years and used it for my small lizards to bask on. With some hot water and a soft brush it cleaned up nicely and makes a perfect addition to my little tank!
I really need to pick up a small ball of java moss when I get some natives to put in my tank...gosh, I used to have tons of that stuff but got rid of it years ago when all my tropical fish died.

Nice tank, but I wouldn't put dace in there; they're active fish and need more room than that. It would be great for some of the tiny killifish (bluefin, least, etc.), a pair of pygmy sunfish, or some shrimp or dwarf crayfish.

That is an amazing piece of driftwood. I have been looking for a decent piece of driftwood for a while, i want to get java moss for it as well, i think that looks really good in an aquarium. I got my fish for my current tank yesterday, but i could not find any decent driftwood, i may have to expand my search for a nice piece.

Pes, I will definately keep my eyes open for anymore nice peices of wood. Some beautiful peices can be found submerged in cooler streams or smaller non-chain fishstores. I used to have a half dozen great driftwood specimens but most of them went to a garage sale when I got rid of a few 10 gallon tanks.

Thanks, i think i need to get my butt out into a creek better than i have this year. All i have gotten are a bunch of black nosed dace for my first native fish tank. They were easy to catch i caught them right off the bank. I have a sprained ankle, and after that heals up, i plan to head to a bigger creek, and hopefully catch a variety of fish, instead of just having one kind in my tank as i do currently. I also think i will be able to find some better pieces of driftwood then too.

Now I just need to net some fish. A pair of darters would probably do well in this tank and I know I have good access to them at the creek.
Are there any other ideas for Iowa natives that would do well in this tank? I know I have to catch them first, but an idea when I am culling the fish streamside would be great help untill I get my 30 gallon ready.

Suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Nate

I wish i could help with darter species, but being from Pennsylvania, i am a little out of the loop on Iowa natives. I am looking to add some darters in my tank as well, but right now, the only species i can find in my drainage is Johny Darters, and i was hoping for something with a little more color.
