Looks like Nate and I wil be going to the Vemilion River in LaSalle county an Saturday morning. We'll meet at Matthiessen state park.
Post here if you want directions. We'll firm up the meeting time this week.
Get Gar photos especially if you see anything like spawning condition fish....You have to or I'll reach through this computer and castrate you...

Also just plain let me know how things are going at Garvana...

I guess you want urogenital port shots, any other shots in particular?
Uland, would you be able to go Friday morning? That looks like it works best for me. But, I could try to flex to Saturday. I already got Friday cleared by the official (my girlfriend)
Nate, I doubt I can take off Friday. Work has been busy and that would make it a 4 day weekend for me. If Saturday is no good for you, just let me know and we'll try and make this work.

You know the drill on these guys... Gar porn shots and anything generally observed as odd or unusual... They should be just entering their spawning run right now so you might see some interesting things here and there..I guess you want urogenital port shots, any other shots in particular?
I.E. coloration changes, general bulk in Females etc....

I could not help but notice that my captive L. platostomus head color became rather dark one my sunfish began spawning. Could just be a coincidence though.

Thats interesting.. I'm not sure I know what to make of that. I do however know Gar will spawn over sunfish nests so it could be related or maybe not. I think you just got the rusty hamster wheel going.. It would be interesting to look further into Shorty / Centrarchid associations.

Oh golly....this is an office tank so I'm able to observe these fishes more often than elsewhere. The sunfish are geared up for a second spawn and the Gar has oddly attempted to take possession of the old nest. The gar inspects the old nest site several times a day. Honestly I get impression the gar is defending the old nest site to the point the dominant male sunfish decided to create an alternative nest site.
I've never heard of such an association but I'm just a guy keeping fish in my office. Just anecdotal stuff here folks...nothing to get excited about.
