lol that looks like a smallmouth with sunspots or freckles or moles or whatever you want to call them. It is indeed a very unique looking fish.

I've seen that on bass in lakes out in Ohio. It is a viral infection. Not exactly sure which virus it is that affects the fish, but I was told by Division of Wildlife officials that it isn't a fatal virus. They also noted it being more common in fish that have been blinded in one eye. Was that fish blinded by chance?

I'll ask the person who took the photo. He's on another forum.

That would be nice mount on my wall. I could make it out of the wood just like I took decoy carving class at high school.

There is some info about this condition in the original thread at the other forum:

The post there discusses "black spot" trematodes. If you read the post, it seems to be describing the "head of a pin"-sized black spots we're all familiar with. It doesn't sound like something that could cause the massive blotches on that bass. So... the virus that Nate mentions?

Could it be a melanistic bass? kind of like the male mosquitofish, mollies, and golden topminnows from Florida many of us are familiar with. Just a thought, thats what it looked like to me.

Looks like melanism in the bass, and it's a smallmouth.

Is that guy the Equalizer? Remember that show from the late 80's starring Edward Woodward? I wondered what he was up to these days. Awesome show, was in reruns on some other channels recently, but not anymore that I know of.
