I won't say it won't work, but I'd be really supprised if any fish survive a winter here in 30" of water, unless you use your pump in the winter to keep the pond ice free(at least a portion.
I live on the west side of the state, and 2" of ice is not at all uncommon, and in a smaller pond like that I'd not be suprised to see it freeze solid. The thing is though is does not have to freeze solid...
With only 30(max), of working depth, a "normal" winter with 12-18" of ice will fill most of it other then the deepest area, and cause a likely complete depletion of oxygen.
Locally, any pond with less then about 6" of water tends to not have any fish life unless it's also fed by springs or a stream or an inlet of some kind, or is areated in the case of many of them.(to keep the ice down a bit, and constantly introduce oxygenated water).
Good luck but I'd make sure you have at least an areator of some kind for the winter.

I wonder if an electric birdbath deicer would keep a portion open and whether that would provide enough oxygen. Could be a good solution if a bigger pond isn't possible.

You can buy pond de-icers. They are around $40 to $50 in the Drs. Foster & Smith catalog.

If there is a Petsmart nearby you can get cheap Chinese grown water lilies for you pond.
They grow OK and can cover the surface

I now have my sump running all the time into my pond with a little dranigae tube that comes into play cleaning the top of the water and taking the water out when too high and makes a swampy part for frogs! I willl post new pics tommorow! The sump will countinusly run during winter leaving a portion of the ice open and adding oxygen to pond!

just becasue you can get dirty and not slosh water around in the house... you never were gonna fit in that 90 gallon tank...

Pickerel won't last long with crappie. A crappie can eat a pickerel just a few inches shorter than itself, due to their torpedo shape. If you want to spawn them, you're going to need to take the crappie out (and any other fish you may have in there) which will eat your babies, and your going to need to load it with plants (grassy plants work best, as they spawn in floodplains in the wild), since thats what they will use to spawn on.
