Cedar Creek, VA

While trying to avoid trout streams in the morning and early thunderstorms in the aftenroon, Drew and I managed to actually see some interesting things today. We found two native species (Orconectes obscurus and Cambarus bartonii) and one invasive (O. virilis). Thankfully we were in an area that does not provide much habitat for the invasive; only two or three very large individuals were found. I've seen similar numbers in nearby Atlantic Piedmont streams that don't have much large cobble and slab rocks. In many other streams throughout the Atlantic O. virilis has displaced smaller Orconectids completely.

I always enjoy crayfishing. It's something I've been doing since I was four years old with my granddad. Did you happen to find any berried female? It's always a plus to me when I find a berried female (unless it's an invasive).
