Ohio Environmental Council - Unleashing the Power of Green
Position Title: Air and Energy Program Associate – Green Jobs and Innovation
Status: Full time employee
Date posted: June 6th, 2008
Resumes due: July 7th, 2008
Location: Columbus, Ohio

The Ohio Environmental Council (OEC) is seeking a key staff member to conduct policy and outreach
activities that will focus on statewide, national, and international trends and opportunities in green
business, science and technology. The new Clean Air and Energy Program Associate will work to
identify positive economic and political trends that will strengthen OEC’s program work, build bridges
in the legislature, and inspire our members and organizational allies to have hope, illustrating that
solutions to the exponentially growing environmental and economic challenges being wrought by
climate change, soaring energy prices, and unfettered development are at hand.

The OEC is a growing statewide environmental advocacy group with a full-time staff of 17 and a 20
member Board of Directors dedicated to building a better place for Ohioans to live, work, and play. The
OEC staff advocates for a cleaner, greener Ohio by interacting with the state legislature and executive
agencies, local groups, concerned citizens, other environmental and conservation groups, local and
county governments, and non-traditional allies.
Project Description:
We are looking to hire a unique, ahead-of-the-curve professional interested in helping the OEC to
“unleash the power of green” by building relationships with leaders in the financial services,
healthcare, technology, higher education, corporate and entrepreneurial sectors who are strong
promoters of green jobs and green business development in the state of Ohio. Our new Clean Air and
Energy Program Associate will work with staff to build these connections in current and future OEC
campaigns. In addition, the Associate will be responsible for tracking and analyzing national and
international trends, patterns, and applications of sustainability. This information will add to the ability
of OEC’s staff, membership, supporters and legislators to learn about and promote the most
economically and politically viable approaches to building a cleaner, greener, more prosperous Ohio.
The Associate will provide leadership and expertise by coordinating and carrying out message
development, policy research, media contact, lobbying plans, campaign design, fundraising initiatives,
and marketing opportunities in cooperation with other OEC staff. Responsibilities will include
participation in local and state green business development initiatives, involvement in statewide
sustainability councils and business networks, and relationship building with university business
development staff. The Associate will be responsible for participating in statewide advocacy and
organizing efforts in green jobs and business development – focusing initially on broad clean air and
energy issues, particularly energy efficiency, but eventually addressing other programmatic
opportunities related to OEC’s focus. The Associate will share responsibility for project funding, such
as writing proposals, reports, and concept papers, researching new funding sources, and ensuring that
program deadlines are met. Along with the advocacy and development teams, the new Clean Air and
Energy Associate will also promote OEC through presentations, relationships with members and
prospective members, and participation in fundraising and membership activities.

Qualifications: The Clean Air and Energy Associate must have significant leadership qualities with
demonstrated skills in advocacy, outreach, and policy development. Strong networking and
relationship development skills are a necessity, as is an entrepreneurial and positive attitude.
Familiarity with basic business structures, knowledge of public and private financing mechanisms, and
experience in a private sector work environment is important. The Associate should have substantial
experience in a demanding work environment, and good communication and team-building
skills. Additionally, our new hire must possess the willingness and ability to travel and occasionally
work evening and weekend hours, strong writing and speaking skills, proficiency in word processing
and use of the Internet. Good energy and strong self-motivation are critical. The minimum
qualifications shall include graduation from a recognized college or university with a Bachelors

Degree. An advanced degree, extensive work experience, and/or professional accreditation are
preferred, but not required. Knowledge of Ohio—environmental, economic, and political—is highly
desirable.

Salary and benefits: The salary range will be commensurate with experience. The position offers
excellent benefits including paid health, dental, vision and life insurance, employer-matched
retirement fund, and paid vacation, family, sick, and holiday leave.

Qualified candidates should send their cover letter, resume, and three references to:
