I struggle to get people to help me seine when I go on collecting trips. My girlfriend isn't interested and my buddy is always working or something. Is there a way to seine with one person? Maybe a smaller seine? Any input is greatly appreciated.

I use a 4 ft. seine streched between a pair of crutches.

I don't have any collecting buddys and I get by with a 4' seine, I have seen them for sale at Walmart and Dicks. Granted, it does not work well in slow moving water but it does work in fast moving streams. I mostly just use a dip net these days.

Until the formation of the Catfish Alliance, my seines were almost ruined by dry rot. But my dipnets got LOTS of use.

Sometimes a dip net or 4 ft siene just won't do. I've had pretty good success by anchoring one pole of a ten foot siene with medium size rocks or if possible stuck in the substrate or any cooperative shoreline brush. Then I take the other pole walk it out as far as I can then over as far as the net streches and finally a quick run to the other pole and drag both up the bank till the net is completely out of the water. It is hard work so I don't repeat it more the a few hours
I've done this in the middle of large creeks to sample a pool by anchoring one pole at the edge of the pool circling away and back , pulling the anchored pole and making a run to the nearest shore. You have to be determined as often snags or poor anchoring or cramps will do in your efforts.
Recently in a large river where a four foot deep area offshore was believed to harbor the Orangespot sunnies I was after I just left one pole floating down stream pulled the other upstream then did a quick circle to the floating pole grabbed and held them outstretched as much as my small frame would allow and dashed to shore. Got three males that way. But a partner is much preferred.
