This picture was taken in sunlight and not altered, other than being cropped.

That's a beautiful fish Philip! Are they breeding for you and what else is in the pond?

This fish is wild caught.

I am running out of ideas on coaxing these fish to spawn. I'll write a long post after a few more attempts to get these fish to spawn in a tank.

Phil hopefully you have some luck and can provide some valuable and much needed information about this fish's ecology.

I don't know how many fish you have you are trying to spawn right now or if this is too complex but I have a suggestions. A lot of outdoor water partioned with various sunfish species? How far you exclude the sunfish from the shiners would be up to you, completely, partially, only among treatment groups, etc.. Hormones would be present in the water from all sunfish species to some extent but visual contact and nest building would only be available from a specific species.

The peak sunfish spawning period ended 2 weeks ago. My Dollar Sunfish have already spawned twice. I am not sure if it would be better to try and add more sunfish, who might not be in the mood to breed anymore, stick with the Dollar Sunfish, or try something else. My Welaka grew, a bit slowly, but are a good size now. Lost 2 males, still have 8 full finned terminal males. I only have 6 females and 2 transitional males?

WOW.

I seem to recall from a breeding welaka article from the distant past that what you need for success isn't sunfish per se, it's sunfish milt. Not something you can likely rush down to your local oriental supermarket and pick up, but maybe that gives you more options and/or extends the season.
