Are the (personal) messages that I send saved anywhere?
Is there a way I can set preferences so the forum saves a copy of all messages that I send?

I changed the default awhile ago so that "Add a copy of this message to my sent items folder?" is checked. That is towards the bottom of the screen when you "Compose New Message".
If that box isn't checked, then it is not saved.
