I would first check to see if it is a legal method of capture.

As far as bait... minnows. I've heard of people catching them in traps but not have done so myself.

I would guess a small pickeral might find it's way into a trap after the minnows already in there.
I know in the bait pond at my dad's place, traps can't be left over night because eels get in and eat all the minnows by morning.

It is almost certainly illegal and I would not attempt it. Having said that, Purina Pickerel Chow does the trick for me. A little bit of minced Yazoo shiner adds spice to the bait - just roll the pellets around on a board covered with minced Yazoo shiner, Bayou darter, or what have you, and let them dry. I use my Bass-O-Matic to pulverize the fish, but you could just grind them up with a pestle or a round rock.

I think you might have missed the point -- it may not be legal to keep pickerel that you catch in a trap. Check your state regulations, and post back what you find here.

Are you able to identify Grass Pickerel from Chain Pickerel and other related species? Only Grass/Redfin pickerel are suitable in an aquarium.

I'd guess a minnow trap would be fairly inneffective, anyway. Pickerel are ambush predators, so I don't picture them hovering around a trap and finding the entrance. Only live minnows would possibly work as bait -- yes, Irate was completely kidding (except for the part about it possibly being illegal).

You would have to be from Mississippi to get the joke. But AFIK, NOBODY lets you catch pickerel in a trap.
