Blackwater sampling

We got out yesterday for a little sampling in the Edisto River and its tribs. I was in search of some pugnose minnows to try to get some photos. The highlight of the trip was seeing a large, nicely colored mud snake. We tried to capture it for some photos but it was too far under a tree by the time we grabbed it and we couldn't get it back out. Here are the species we got:

Boy, a lot of those shiners look alike, don't they? That's why I love 'em.

You get spotted sucker in blackwater streams and with those fish?!?!

Yes, spotted suckers are one of the few suckers found in these streams. I have also seen brassy jumprocks and northern hogsuckers.

Thanks for the side-by-side on the shiners. They're so similar it really helps to have good photos together when new guys like me are learning to ID them.
