I had my wife check out the book from EKU campus library yesterday. This book is amazing. It outlines all the native KY fishes gives location, habitats, etc.. Also, for each fish it shows a KY county seperated map and the streams/rivers and plots where these fish are located. The only drawbacks is that the book is 20 years old and it doesn't give pics of the fish it's describing. Also, it only puts "dots" on the stream and doesn't give you the stream name. (I could be wrong on this because I've only thumbed through it for a few minutes.) But you can easily match a stream from the book using google earth or similar program.

I would love to find a copy of this to buy. If anyone wantes to know locations of fish in KY give me a shout. I didn't know where to post this topic, so I thought it might work here.

Hey Josh,

That's one that outside of Inter Library Loan is more tough to find than a blackside dace. I guess you just gotta know where to find it ;)

David Eisenhour, Brook Burr and Matt Thomas have been working on a Fishes of Kentcky, and that may come to fruition soon enough. I'm not sure which of the three are heading that. I don't know David at all, but it looks like he's teaching a lot from his website, as I've been checking in and out there for developments, Brooks has been wrapping up the revised edition of the Peterson guide (along with his career), and Matt has been plain out busy. So I don't know what the status is, hopefully it's coming into someone's focused attention shortly. It's a very necessary addition to the literature available on your great state :)

I'd love to find this book as well. Especially if it gives you specific waterways that you can find the fish. I searched on Ebay and half.com and didn't find it. Amazon.com has it listed but says none are available. I'm gonna keep a watch on Amazon in hopes that it comes up. I notice it's hard to find some of the older native fish books.

For all those bibliophiles, I really rely on addall.com or abebooks.com. Check the former regularly and you'll turn up with a gem. I was over-anxious on my first distributional atlas of KY fishes and paid $100, but about 3 months later there were 3 copies for $60 to $80, and I bought them all. Just wait and you will find. Those extra copies are now in museum collections, so they're gone. But watch for them they do appear.

KY Fish&Game has a pretty good site. It lists by species, with a county listing under each species.

Thanks bpkeck, I will look into those sites for the book. I'm assuming they also have some other great native book finds.

I've had a paperback copy for so many years I don't remember when or where I got it, had to be under $30 as when I first started collecting the state fish books I was really cheap and poor. It would be nice if it had some photos.

The Fishes of Kentucky only has black and white photos and no distribution maps. The two together aren't too bad but I do like some color photos.
