Mark, Stephanie, Russ and myself sampled one site at the Vermilion River yesterday. We failed to get key photos subjects but I had a great time and a decent species list despite missing fish we've found in the past.

Lepisosteus platostomus Shortnose Gar
Dorosoma cepedianum Gizzard Shad
Campostoma anomalum Central Stoneroller
Ctenopharyngodon idella Grass Carp
Cyprinella lutrensis Red Shiner
Cyprinella spiloptera Spotfin Shiner
Luxilus chrysocephalus Striped Shiner
Lythrurus umbratilis Redfin Shiner
Notropis atherinoides Emerald Shiner
Notropis hudsonius Spottail Shiner
Notropis percobromus Carmine Shiner
Notropis stramineus Sand Shiner
Phenacobius mirabilis Suckermouth Minnow
Pimephales notatus Bluntnose Minnow
Semotilus atromaculatus Creek Chub
Carpiodes cyprinus Quillback
Catostomus commersonii White Sucker
Hypentelium nigricans Northern Hog Sucker
Ictiobus bubalus Smallmouth Buffalo
Moxostoma erythrurum Golden Redhorse
Noturus flavus Stonecat
Lepomis cyanellus Green Sunfish
Lepomis humilis Orangespotted Sunfish
Lepomis macrochirus Bluegill
Micropterus dolomieu Smallmouth Bass
Micropterus salmoides Largemouth Bass
Pomoxis nigromaculatus Black Crappie
Etheostoma caeruleum Rainbow Darter
Etheostoma zonale Banded Darter
Percina caprodes Logperch
Percina phoxocephala Slenderhead Darter
Sander canadensis Sauger
Aplodinotus grunniens Freshwater Drum

If we had a fourth person on seine, I'm pretty sure we would have found 10 more species.

Did you kill the Grass Carp?

All captured Grass carp were euthanized humanely. This is a naturally flowing river with breeding populations of Grass carp (so much for sterile triploids). Most importantly a voucher was kept for records since Grass carp are not yet recorded from this part of the Illinois River basin.

I wish I could believe it makes a difference but I can't release them in any case.

How big was the sauger?? Did you catch him in the net or on hook and line?

How was the color on the red shiners? Spotfins?

I wish I could have gone with you. :(

The sauger was about 8-10". We caught it in the 3/16" mesh 20' x 6' net.
The color on the spotfins and reds were very good.

I didn't get your late evening PM until this morning. Sorry about that. I must have gone to bed Saturday night before your message.

No problem.

Is that the first sauger that you caught in the seine? We netted the heck out of that area over the years and caught just about all you can imagine (including that large northern pike) but we never did get a sauger in the net.

I believe we seined a Sauger (Sander canadensis) once before. I know a year or two ago we actually seined a large Bowfin (Amia calva) and recently seined several Silver Chub (Macrhybopsis storeriana). Our last visit yielded many Mooneye (Hiodon tergisus) and a single Longnose Gar (Lepisosteus osseus).

I believe the trick to seining many species at this location is simply going up to your neck in water with the 6' deep seine. I have two nets this size now and four people would really increase our odds in the pools as well as help in the deep runs. Mark and I found Phenacobius mirabilis Suckermouth Minnow upstream in the very fast run.

Crazy isn't it. For anyone who doesn't know...catching Rainbow, Slenderhead darters and Bowfin within a 100 feet of another is odd. I have photos of the Bowfin capture last year as well as the shot of the river.

As with all of the rivers around here....it's high as it's been since March.

Wow. Nice bowfin. Is that solomon in the pic?

I'm going to the vermilion on Thur. with my buddy I think. He hasn't netted fish before, so I'll be teaching him as we go.
