I am also only 20. Being 16 never stopped me from collecting and keeping natives, but my dad is the person who got me started on them so I've always have a collecting buddy :D .

I wish that I had explored this hobby at a much younger age. By the time you guys are my age, you should be downright authorities on native fish.

I will be sure to remember you guys when collecting.

I think this is somewhere we all would like to go. Building relationships. Trading. Meeting for joint collecting trips. I'm in the early stages of this myself. Maybe we'll meet.

This is something I would like to do as well, I just have to get over my fear of shipping. There are definantly a few members here whom I owe some fish to.

Arthur, it is easy to get over(fishshipophobia) You do the best you can packing them, take them to the post office, and forget about it for a couple of days, as there is nothing else you can do at that point. Most make it, some do not. We all know and understand that. You might be surprised at how well your first shipment turns out.

I hope I can get into shipping fish soon. I want to get that fear done and over with! I am just happy that I got into natives because they are sooo much easier and cheaper to ship then trops! Hopefully I can find somebody around me to collect with and even teach me a few things.

I would also like to encourage testing your shipping skills with some fatheads (or equal) from a bait shop. Pack it up like your actually sending it out but leave it at home and see how long they can last. I never thought that I would send fish in the mail but now I do it somewhat often. I must admit I had a bad string of shipments but I wasn't using tank water and I also had failed to wrap the individual bags in paper to prevent suffocation. It's a wonder so many fish I shipped incorrectly made it alive.

I also should mention that I usually get my Gazetteer maps from Wal-Mart. I've found no matter where I travel I seem to be able to get the local Gazetteer for about $15-17. Not a bad price for something off the shelf.

And before you send me hate mail for encouraging the killing of bait shop fatheads AND sending someone to Wal-Mart. I can only say that the fatheads are doomed top begin with and if you want to pay list price (19.95 + $7.00 S&H) be my guest.

I've already got plans that when I get an apartment, I'm getting a 55 gallon tank, and setting up my 29 and 10. Right now, the 10 is all I can fit in this small dorm room. But yea, my passion for fish has gone off and on throughout the years. Right now it is at its strongest I'd say.

I have had a fish tank ever since my 10th birthday and have been at it strong ever since. I really cannot understand when people say they get burned out on this hobby. But I guess I have a couple things limiting me from advancing too fast and getting burnt out....my parents and $$$$.

Cough! Cough! Brooklamprey. Cough! Cough!

I have already offered .......Did I????
Chad that it is never a problem to come out with me and get a little Seining and dipnetting experiance.
I do regular surveys and sampling and your welcome to come along any time. Age is not an issue to me..Anyone can learn to run a seine no matter what their age and with me barking at you..... you will learn it fast :P

Winter is the time I do alot of near shore rock flipping and sandy bottom seine runs. I do not work the muck as much so it is a good time to get out and learn a few tricks before experiancing the Thigh high thick muck vegitation seining and sampling I do in summer :)

Sandtiger, if you can get your hands on some Kordon Breather Bags you will feel a lot better. I've had a delayed shipment last 9 days in one! You ship them without extra air, and they exchange gasses with the surrounding air (sort of like gore-tex, I suppose). The only thing you need to do is cushion the bags with crumpled newspaper so that they don't rest against other bags (as they won't be able to "breathe" then). If you have a LFS, I bet they can order some from you. Alternatively, you may be able to get some from someone here.

I'm probably weird but I've been removing brains from scarlet shiners of late, 85 as of yesterday. But I don't recommend it for everyone, we're researching variations in brain structure and function. My 20gal. natives display tank has almost 20 scarlets, 3 striped shiners, about 5 bluntnose minnows and a blackspotted topminnow.

I would like to add to BL's list of references and maps and sat that everyone should own a copy of the Delorme Atlas and Gazetteer for their state. These maps, in my opinion, are indispensible when it comes to collecting.

HA!! Turns out I have had one of these for my state all along. Just found it hidden downstairs.

The only problem I have is that I am young. I am only 16 and most people do not want to deal with younger kids for obvious reasons. Many people just think it is odd. That is why I do not like to admit my age on forums because many people will not be as willing to work with me. And they treat me like I do not know anything  . Thank you for the links Brooklampery! I will be sure to read on those and print out the maps. I spent about 2 hours reading on the last link you sent me :D .

Hey everyone that collects fish are sixteen years old what are these other guys talking about. I am sixteen but I have just last week celebrated my thirty third aniversery of being sixteen. So do not worry about age because some of us fish collectors never have grown up anyway. My mother used to be upset with me going into the local ditch to collect Sailfins down in louisiana because she had to wash my dirty clothes. Now I have passed this on to my wife. But she hates it when I do not uncuff my rolled up muddy pants before I throw them in the laundry. So ya we are all sixteen I think.
