I've got a 55 gallon with 3-4 inches of sand in which I'd like to put my soft shell turtle (4-5 in) and some Pumpkinseed Sunfish. Previously I'd treated the tank with copper safe or some other copper treatment for parasites, the tank has been dry and empty for about 2-3 months. Is washing the sand sufficient to get the copper out or is there something else I need to do? Or is tossing the sand the best alternative?

I am no expert on this, but activated carbon would remove the copper quickly. I would suggest stirring the sand periodically to ensure that there are no remaining pockets.

Marine poly filter works good, it turns blue with copper
